 | In addition to the Orsay museum with its impressionist masterpieces, the Marmottan museum in Paris presents a splendid collection of paintings by Claude Monet donated by his son Michel Monet: 65 chef-d'oeuvres including "Impression soleil levant" which gave its name to the Impressionism (with many famous painter's names such as Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissaro and Alfred Sisley), the Rouen cathedral and a few Nymphéas. The Nymphéas are paintings of waterlilies which Claude Monet painted in his last years in his Giverny house in Normandy west of Paris (have a look at them). Right, the church of Auvers sur Oise by Vincent Van Gogh. Born in 1853 in the Netherlands, Vincent Van Gogh died by commiting suicide in Auvers sur Oise near Paris in 1890. In contrast with the other impressionists, Vincent Van Gogh expressed distress in his works. Using intense colors and apparent brush strokes, Vincent Van Gogh's paintings are intensely expressive. Because of that and of his tumultuous life, Vincent Van Gogh is maybe the most popular impressionist today. Although he lived and died as a poor man, his paintings nowodays sell for record amounts. |
